CLIFFS OF MOHER & GALWAY TOUR

8.00 AM
We depart from St. Stephen’s Green to ember on our tour incorporating the world-famous CLIFFS OF MOHER and GALWAY, aboard our luxury coach.

9.00 AM
We pause for a short break along the way at the BARRACK OBAMA roadside services area in Moneygall, Co. Offaly. On his visit to Ireland in 2011 US President Barrack Obama visited Moneygall, the home of some of his distant cousins. One of his great-great-great-grandfathers was a man named hayed from Moneygall.

9.30 AM

We depart Moneygall and go for Limerick’s bypass, the M20 motorway. We travel through the SHANNON TUNNEL and emerge in CO. CLARE which is a very historic area of Ireland. En route to the ATLANTIC COAST, we will pass many iconic ANGLO NORMAN TOWER HOUSE CASTLES. Also we will pass the world famous BUNRATTY CASTLE where we pause for a photo stop. At another point we will pause to photograph the famous CLARE ABBEY, a post Norman earn CISTERCIAN ABBEY. Overall we will given a glimpse into the colourful and varied history of EARLY CHRISTIAN IRELAND. Just before the CLIFFS OF MOHER we will pass through the village of LISCANNOR, the birthplace of JOHN HOLLAND,THE INVENTOR OF THE SUBMARINE. We pause to photograph the monument to this innovative genius.

11.00 AM

We arrive at the world renowned CLIFFS OF MOHER, the highest sea cliffs in Europe. At their highest point they stand at a staggering 215 meters or 702 feet above the crashing waves of the ATLANTIC OCEAN below. There is a breath-taking CLIFF TOP WALK which runs for 8Km/5 miles on which you are afforded endless photographic opportunities. The scenery here is simply stunning and not to be missed.  On a clear day the views are excellent, taking in the ARAN ISLANDS, THE TWELVE PINS in CONNEMARA, and the DINGLE PENINSULA in CO. Kerry. In the CLIFFS OF MOHER VISITOR CENTRE there are two restaurants, a souvenir shop and abundant toilet facilities. There’s a museum which has many audio-visual facilities explaining and interpreting the CLIFFS OF MOHER, its flora & fauna and of course its geological make-up. Also there’s a 3-D cinema which will help you to understand the ecology of the CLIFFS OF MOHER.

1.00 PM
We depart the CLIFFS OF MOHER and head north-east along the BURREN COAST en route to GALWAY CITY.  Along the way we pass through some really panoramic scenery taking in views of the ARAN ISLANDS, GALWAY BAY and the south CONNEMARA COAST. We pass by BALLINALACKAN CASTLE, the home of the PIRATE QUEEN OF IRELAND. We pause for a photo stop at the rugged BURREN COAST. This is a KARST LIMESTONE PAVEMENT which is almost a unique feature, only appearing in one other location on the earth’s surface.  We continue northwards past BLACK HEAD, past the LLAMA FARM and onwards to BALLYVAUGHAN. After this we pass the famous mediaeval CORCOMROE ABBEY just before we descend off THE BURREN PLATEAU down into the lands of south Co. Galway. We then continue to KINVARRA, home of the Merriman Hotel which is the largest and most extensive building in Ireland under a traditional THATCHED ROOF. Just north of KINVARRA we park the coach to allow to get out and go photograph the famous DUNGUAIRE CASTLE. This is an ANGLO-NORMAN TOWER HOUSE CASTLE, built in the mediaeval era on the site of the former CASTLE OF KING GUAIRE, who was a famous pre-Christian hedonist who loved banquets and merry-making.

4.00 PM
We arrive at GALWAY, otherwise known as THE CITY OF THE TRIBES. It is the cultural capital of western Ireland. We park the coach just south-west of Eyre Square which is the central plaza of this really compact and intimate city of great heritage. There are many restaurants, shopping malls, bars and TRADITIONAL IRISH MUSIC SESSIONS in full swing in this city.  Here you can visit the SALMON WEIR BRIDGE, GALWAY CATHEDRAL, THE FOUR CORNERS, THE CLADDAGH and of course the famous SPANISH ARCH.

5.30PM

We take our leave of GALWAY and begin our journey east along the M6 highway to Dublin.  We hope you will have enjoyed the many experiences afforded to you during the day of WESTERN IRELAND including the icons of EARLY CHRISTIAN IRELAND, THE CLIFFS OF MOHER, THE BURREN COAST, THE CASTLES AND GALWAY CITY.

8.30 PM
We arrive at Dublin city centre.

    Our trip to the Cliffs of Moher with Smart Tour was superb. Niall, the tour guide was friendly, funny and extremely knowledgeable. The driver was also brilliant.
